<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase color reproducibility of a color image in an image reading apparatus capable of obtaining the color image with a monochrome sensor. <P>SOLUTION: Light sources 42 and 43 radiate white light. A sensor chip 26 images a document with light reflected therefrom, the reflected light being from the radiated white light. Color filter units 46 and 47 are provided on an optical passage path between the light sources 42 and 43, and the sensor chip 26, and are constituted by color filters CFR, CFG, CFB corresponding to plural colors that are disposed in the form of a matrix. Liquid crystal panels 44 and 45 are provided on an optical passage path between the light sources 42 and 43, and the sensor chip 26, and are constituted by plural pixels provided correspondingly to the individual color filters CFR, CFG, and CFB, the plural pixels switching between transmittance and blockage of the light that is transmitted or to be transmitted through the corresponding color filters CFR, CFG, and CFB.
