<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of suppressing the deterioration of a display image, and to provide a game machine. <P>SOLUTION: The image display device 5 for displaying an image includes a solid-state light source (LED 611), a light modulating device (liquid crystal panel 62) for modulating light emitted from the solid-state light source to form the image, and a control device (control means 7) for controlling the lighting of the solid-state light source so that the luminance of the solid-state light source corresponds to a set value that is lower than a designed maximal luminance of the solid-state light source.
