PURPOSE: An apparatus for tracking the head and tail of a plate and a plate cooling system using the same are provided to independently trace the head and tail of a plate, thereby preventing an error in head tracking from affecting tail tracking. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for tracking the head and tail of a plate comprises a sensor unit which detects the existence of a plate in the corresponding position and a determination unit which determines the head of a plate when the output of the sensor unit changes from non-detection into plate detection and the tail of a plate when the output of the sensor unit changes from plate detection into non-detection. The sensor unit comprises first to third sensors which detect the existence of a plate using recognition of surface lights, temperature measurement, and light emission and measurement of reflection lights, respectively.
