PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for recognizing earphones in a portable terminal are provided to divide a power level into terminal key input recognition power and earphone insertion or elimination recognition power by converting the portable terminal control key input recognition power level of the earphones. CONSTITUTION: A switch unit differently sets a control key input recognition power level and an earphone insertion or elimination recognition power level. A portable terminal recognizes the input of a control key based on the control key input recognition power level(407). The portable terminal executes a call connection operation or a call termination operation(409). When the power of the measured end corresponds to the set earphone insertion or elimination recognition power level, the terminal recognizes the insertion or elimination of the earphone(411). The portable terminal is operated according to the recognized result(413).
