<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination unit capable of reducing generation of speckle while miniaturizing the unit and improving efficiency of light use, and to provide a projection type display unit and a direct-view type display unit including the illumination unit. <P>SOLUTION: An optical magnification of optical system configured with a first direction angle conversion device and first and second fly-eye lenses, and a shape of a first micro vibration element are set such that each of light source images has a size not exceeding a size of one cell in the second fly-eye lens, the light source images being formed on the second fly-eye lens by the respective cells in the first fly-eye lens.
