[Class 83 (iii)] Collets comprise a number of rigid members angularly spaced and connected bv resilient material. A number of flat-sided members 31, Figs. 2 and 3, for example of hardenedy steel, are spaced apart and connected together bv bonded resilient material 40 such as rubber or rubbery composition. The inner surfaces 33 are ground to cylindrical form whilst the outer surfaces 34 lie on a cone. The collet may be used in a bevel closing screw cap chuck 50, 54 in which the cap flange 55 forces the collet to contract through the intermediary of an abutment ring 56 and race of balls 57. A releasing spring 58 is provided. The plates may be inclined to the radius as indicated at 32 to give a toggle action under driving load. The rubber does not extend to the outer or inner surfaces. In a modification, the members 31 are thin and parallel sided, and may lie in axial planes or be helically arranged. In a form in which the rubber need not be bonded to the steel, a series of holes 36, Fig. 5, are provided in the members and the adjacent layers of rubber are connected by rubber passing through the holes. Each of these collet sections 38, Fig. 8, has a radially extending member 37 formed with gripping edges and with elongated apertures 36A through which the rubber 40c passes. In another bonded form, the radially interposed rubber 40D, Fig. 9, extends into lateral grooves 39. The collet may be built up from alternating sectors of metal and rubber, the rubber and metal in axially adjacent sectors being staggered. The gripping elements may comprise a series of radially arranged pins embedded in a body of rubber. Flat plates 60, Figs. 17 and 18, have reversely arranged conical surfaces 62, 63 and tongues 64 are punched out leaving orifices 66 for the rubber, the tongues extending into the rubber to give increased rigidity. In a modification, the tongues are longer and are not bent quite through a right angle so that the ends of the tongues of one plate project into the slots of the next, the whole being embedded in rubber. In a further modification, the slots are so staggered that the ends of the squarely bent tongues abut the surface of the adjacent plate. Specification 482,766 is referred to. |
