<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having high energy density and excellent cycle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: In this nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode containing a negative electrode active material capable of occluding and discharging a lithium ion, the negative electrode active material contains a composite particle 10 composed of a particle 11 of silicon Si, and a particle 12 of a silicon oxide SiO<SB>X</SB>(where, 0≤X≤2), and a carbon material A13.
