PURPOSE: A light guide element, a backlight unit and a display device are provided to reduce manufacturing costs by reducing the number of light sources used for the backlight unit. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit(100) has a plurality of light guide elements(101) arranged in the y-direction. The light guide element forms a recess part(105) on one side xy surface. The light guide element is in the shape of a column. The recess part is perpendicular to the major axis direction of the light guide element. The recess part is charged by a medium having a smaller refraction rate than that of the light guide element.
