PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide magnetic recording medium capable of achieving a high SNR having high thermal stability.

SOLUTION: A magnetic tape has a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binding agent on a nonmagnetic support. The ferromagnetic powder is hexagonal ferrite powder, and in the magnetic layer, a perpendicular squareness ratio without demagnetizing field correction is within the range of 0.6 to 1.0, and a compound obtained by directly substituting a substitutent selected from a group composed of a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group for a ring structure in which Clog P including a double bond is within the range of 2.3 to 5.5 is further included.
