The method involves correcting ignition timing at which air/fuel mixture of a reciprocating internal combustion engine is fired, where the ignition timing is calculated based on a function of adjusted compression ratio and a function of combustion knocking of the air/fuel mixture for the adjusted compression ratio. Another ignition timing is calculated based on a function of optimum efficiency of the internal combustion engine for the adjusted compression ratio, where the latter ignition timing is corrected based on operating parameters of the internal combustion engine.
