Coloured filaments and fibres are produced by spinning polyethylene terephthalate in which is dissolved an organic colouring matter stable at the temperature of the spinning process. Suitable colouring matters mentioned include substituted aminoanthraquinones, for example 1 : 4 - di - p - butylanilino - 5 : 8 - dihydroxy-anthraquinone, and vat dyestuffs of the indigo, thioindigo and anthraquinone series, for example 6 : 61 - dichloro - 4 : 41 - dimethyl - thioindigo. Many other dyestuffs are specified, and mixtures of dyestuffs may also be used. Other substances, such as those described in Specification 504,714, may also be incorporated with the molten polyethylene terephthalate. In one example, a mixture of 1 : 5 - dibenzoyl - amino - anthraquinone, 6 - p - toluidino - 3 - methyl - anthrapyridone and 1 : 4-di-(p-butylanilino)-5 : 8-dihydroxyanthraquinone is mixed with polyethylene terephthalate chips, dried at 160 DEG C. under vacuum, and charged into a grid spinning apparatus at 270 DEG C. The spun yarn is stretched to 5.5 times its own length and bright green fibres of high fastness to wet treatments and to light are obtained. Specifications 527,532, 533,307, 596,688 and 610,137 also are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of axine dyestuffs and contains an additional example. Specifications 460,255 and 560,988 also are referred to. |
