Iridium (III) complexes are described together with methods to prepare and use such complexes. Also described are devices that utilize the iridium (III) complexes. Also disclosed are optical devices, such as organic light emitting devices, photovoltaic devices, and luminescent display devices that comprise one or more compounds of the invention as a functional material, such as a light-emitter or absorber, or both.
