MODULAR BASE STATION WITH VARIABLE COMMUNICATION CAPACITY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CDMA base station that lowers equipment cost at initial implementation and is easily scalable and highly flexible.

SOLUTION: A scalable base station is assembled from a digital base station unit configured to support a plurality of concurrent calls connecting to a public switched network. At initial implementation, two base station units are deployed for redundancy in the case of a failure. Additional base station units may be deployed when the need arises for extra traffic capacity later. If sectorization is required, directivity is combined with the base station units. Two amplifier-equipped antenna modules, each of which contains an omni-directional or a directional antenna, a high-power RF amplifier for transmission signals and a low-noise amplifier for reception signals are coupled to and remote from each of the base station units. A separate power supply module capable of supplying power to the two base station units is actuated as a standby power supply in the event of a power outage to constitute an uninterruptible power supply.
