<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a memory block while writing another memory block, thereby improving access efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: A semiconductor memory comprises a plurality of memory blocks having a plurality of memory areas which hold, for each bit, a plurality of bits of write data and the parity data of the write data. In response to a write command, the write data and the parity data are sequentially written to the memory area of a write memory block being one of the memory blocks. In response to a read command, data is read from a memory area corresponding to a data line to which the write data and the parity data are not supplied in one of the memory blocks other than a write memory block, and data that cannot be read due to write operation is reproduced.
