User-operated electrical switches, such as rocker switches, may become heavily contaminated with bacteria, fungi and viruses in hospitals and other communal applications. Rocker switches are also difficult to fully clean. To reduce cross-infection between users a switch with a flat touch plate 12 and having anti-microbial properties is provided. The touch plate comprises an antimicrobial coating or may comprise a material having antimicrobial properties, such as glass loaded with silver ions. The plateâ s flat surface allows simple cleaning. The switch may be a capacitive touch switch or may be a mechanically-operated switch responding to pressing of the touch plate.
