<p>PURPOSE: A mobile terminal and a control method thereof are provided to reduce the manipulation of a user for inputting characters by switching an input mode or performing a control command based on input to a touch screen, even though an input mode switching command is not inputted by the user. CONSTITUTION: A display unit(151) displays a virtual keypad. If drag to the virtual keypad is sensed, a control unit(180) executes a handwriting mode. If the drag is completed, the control unit recognizes the trace of the drag as a handwriting character. If key input is sensed in the handwriting mode by touching the virtual keypad, the control unit releases the handwriting mode and recognizes a character mapped with the key input. If the drag is started in a first input area of the virtual key pad, the control unit recognizes the trace of the drag as a control command.
