The device (10) has two receptacles (26) for storing coins (12). A sorting unit (16) supplies the coins to one of the receptacles. A transport element includes a set of receiving areas to receive the coins, where each receiving area includes a recess. The coins are slid to a support surface of a support element of the sorting unit from the receiving areas along rotation direction (P1) by the transport element. The coins are supplied through an opening of the receptacle or through an opening of the other receptacle depending on diameter of the coins.
