<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a high quality color image to be obtained by improving color matching accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: A color image forming section causes a color matching pattern to be formed on an intermediate transfer belt as an endless moving member as follows. A reference color sub-scanning ends error detection overlapping pattern YK2, which is formed by overlapping a black pattern Kws as a reference pattern and a yellow pattern Yw1 as a monochrome pattern of color other than black, and a reference color sub-scanning ends error detection monochrome pattern Yws, which is formed by the yellow pattern as the monochrome pattern of color other than black, are formed on the intermediate transfer belt. The reference color sub-scanning ends error detection overlapping pattern YK2 and the reference color sub-scanning ends error detection monochrome pattern Yws are detected by an optical sensor, and based on the detected result, a reference color detection error is calculated, which is a detection error at end positions in the sub-scanning directions of the black pattern Kws.
