The instrument (4) has a light conductor plate (8) made of polymethyl methacrylate and comprising a main surface (9) and two side surfaces (10, 11). Light uncoupling elements i.e. light scattering nanoparticles (14), are arranged in a portion of the plate. Light sources (7, 15) i.e. LEDs, are arranged adjacent to the respective side surfaces and independently controlled by a control device. The main surface forms a portion of a display area (6) of a display element (3). The main surface forms a region of a scale (12) of the indicator. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an indicating instrument.
