[Class 140] [Also in Group IX] A patterned pile fabric is made by coating a backing 12 with adhesive 11 and passing it through an electrostatic field 15 where it receives a uniform erect covering of pile fibres 17 from a conveyer 19; the fabric then passes over air jets 25 whereby at least some of the fibres are tilted before the adhesive hardens (or after resoftening it). The jets may be reciprocated across the fabric and may play continuously or intermittently, or air may be directed through a slit to incline all the fibres in the same direction, or through two slits arranged in a vee to incline them oppositely on opposite sides of a centre line. Or a drum covered by a stencil, or radial arms carrying nozzles, may be rotated under the fabric to " print " patterns thereon. The air pressure may be sufficient to expose the adhesive so that the colour of the adhesive or of the backing is visible, and may be sufficient to reduce the thickness of the adhesive to produce hinge lines in the fabric; a secondary covering of shorter and/or differently-coloured fibres may be applied to the thinned adhesive. The pile,. together with the adhesive layer, may be stripped from the backing and applied to another backing.</p> |
