The invention relates to a method for extending the combustion duration of a spark ignited by a spark plug in an internal combustion engine, wherein a final ignition stage (4) is actuated in the form of an impulse for controlling a current of a primary winding (2) of an ignition coil (1), whereby energy is stored in the primary winding (2), wherein interrupting the current infeed into the primary winding (2) causes a high voltage in a secondary winding (3) of the ignition coil (1), whereby a spark arises at the electrodes of a spark plug (5). In order to prevent thermal effects at the ignition coil or the final ignition stage, but nevertheless enable a long combustion duration of the spark, after switching off the current infeed through the final ignition stage (4, 5) the primary winding (2) is recharged by means of a recharging current, the energy content thereof being transferred from the primary winding (2) to the secondary winding (3) during the combustion duration of the spark. |
