The method involves measuring voltage drops (Eri) along current paths for reference current (Ir). Voltage drops (Esj) are measured along current paths for magnetic coil current (Is). Mean values of the respective measured voltage drops are calculated. Sample values of the respective mean values are selected within respective time slots. A characterizing voltage ratio (E) between the paths for the coil current and between the paths for the reference current is determined based on each sample value or a mean value of the selected sample values. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a magnetic coil device.
