Biofunctionalization of a coating layer, comprises: (a) providing a coating layer having free functional groups on its surface; and (b) immobilizing many different biomolecules on the surface of the coating layer, so that the biomolecules are covalently bonded to the surface of the coating layer. Independent claims are included for: (1) the coating layer having a biofunctionalized surface, obtainable by the process; (2) an article comprising an object and the coating layer bonded with the object; and (3) providing an object with a biofunctional surface, comprising applying the coating layer on the object, and biofunctionalizing the coating layer.
