683,452. Puffing grain. QUAKER OATS CO. Feb. 28, 1951 [June 2, 1950], No. 4846/51. Class 58 In a process for puffing cereal grains by an explosion process in a pressure zone, the cereal grains are subjected to an elevated temperature and then introduced while stilll hot: into the zone for puffing. As shown, grain from a hopper 24 is heatedto a temperature above 212‹F by falling through a conduit 26 containing, a heating zone 28' comprising a pair of substantially parallel spaced screens 30, Fig: 2 (not shown); traversing a hot gas duct 32 through which air heated by heaters 36, may, be circulated by a blower, 34, to a measuring device 42 within the gas duct' which controls the amount fed at 14 to one of several pressure chambers 10 mounted on a revolving drum 12, thereafter this chamber 10 is moved to the chamber closing station 16 where after closing steam is passed into the chamber as the drum 12 rotates and brings the chamber to the puffing station 18 where the pressure is suddenly released so that the grain is explosively puffed and discharged into a collection vessel 20 from which it is withdrawn through a conduit 22.
