PURPOSE: A system for compressing geographic information data and a method thereof are provided to convert a coordinate of a cartesian coordinate system into a polar coordinate system. CONSTITUTION: An absolute coordinate database(100) stores absolute coordinate data. A data compressing unit(200) is connected with the absolute coordinate database. The data compressing unit converts the absolute coordinate data into polar coordinate data. The data compressing unit compresses the converted data.
