A device for applying a tooth brightening composition to a tooth includes a reservoir fluidly connected to an applicator, where applicator having a frictional stress value sufficient to cause mechanical displacement of a biofilm present on a surface of the tooth; a tooth brightening composition disposed within the reservoir; and an activator configured to dispense the tooth brightening composition from the reservoir onto an exterior surface of the applicator. Alternatively or in combination with the above device, the applicator contains one or more pores having a diameter of 0.1-1000 µm.
