The method involves detecting the emission of an internal combustion engine (100) in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. The exhaust gas from the combustion of the internal combustion engine, is supplied by the gas recirculation that is controlled by an exhaust gas recirculation valve (201). The exhaust gas mass flow characterizing signal is detected in the exhaust gas recirculation. The signal depends on the emission from the internal combustion engine. The detected emission is compared with a target value by nitrogen oxide guiding system (250). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for controlling an internal combustion engine; (2) a computer program for executing the internal combustion engine controlling device; and (3) a computer program product with a program code.
