An apparatus for examining a fluid-containing porous sample, such as a rock core from a wellbore, comprises a centrifuge to move fluid into, out of, and/or within the sample and an NMR device to monitor the amount of fluid present at locations within the sample. The centrifuge rotor comprises a sample holder 18 surrounded by an RF coil 20 of the NMR device, such that both the sample and the RF coil rotate together through the magnetic field. The coil axis is transverse to the magnetic field generated by stationary magnets 11, 12. Gradient coils 16 can also be provided. The signals from the radio frequency coil are collected by contactless connections. The sample holder may contain reservoirs for fluid at either end to introduce and collect fluid from the sample during centrifuging. Consequently NMR measurement of the distribution of fluid in the sample can be made while the centrifuge is in motion. |
