摘要 717,543. Batteries. BURGESS BATTERY CO. May 15, 1952, [June 5, 1951.] No. 12315/52. Class 53. [Also in Group V] The cells of a layer-type battery are separated by sheets 24 of flexible insulating fusible material, for example polyethylene or rubber hydrochloride, which are folded round the edges of the cells. The turned-up edges of the sheets overlap and are secured together by heat and pressure to form an outer casing 225 as shown in Fig. 7. An outer casing may also be provided by wrapping several turns of insulating material round the stack of cells and subjecting the whole to heat and pressure in a device shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The stack is pressed between rods 34, 36 before the strip to form the casing, 44, is wound on and the stack is then enclosed in a two-part mould 46 which is electrically heated by coils 52, 54. Fig.. 6 shows an alternative construction in which the separate sheets between the cells are replaced by a single sheet 70 wound zigzag round the cells. Each cell comprises as shown in Fig. 2 a zinc tray 10 lined with paper and containing a manganese dioxide and carbon mix 14 moistened with ammonium chloride and zinc chloride. A carbon plate 16 is provided with a projecting mass 18 consisting of silver particles bonded with wax which projects through an opening 26 in the separating sheet and makes contact with the zinc tray of the adjacent cell.
