The method involves roughening a surface (2) of a crankcase (1) of internal combustion engine, and forming functional surface forming layer on the roughened surface. The roughening process is carried out through chipless stamping of a structure in the surface of the crankcase. The stamping process is carried out using a wheel-like or roller-like knurling tool (7) which is pressed against the surface of crankcase. The knurling tool is moved relative to the hydraulic tool carriers (4,5) in radial direction of cylinder of crankcase.
