<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide alkyl pyridinium dicyanamides, and to provide a use thereof as polar solvents. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to alkyl pyridinium dicyanamides of formula (I) (wherein R<SB POS="POST">n</SB><SP POS="POST">1</SP>represents cyano or 1-20C alkyl, n is an integer of 0 to 3, and the optionally present R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>are identical or different, and R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>represents 1-20C alkyl).
