PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide systems and methods allowing bill payment processing to be initiated from a utility meter.

SOLUTION: A utility meter 105 enables communication with a corresponding utility provider 110 via a network. The utility meter is configured to: measure utility usage; output data associated with the utility usage; receive user instructions to issue measured utility bill payment instructions (405); authenticate the user according to user authentication information (410); and transmit the utility bill payment instructions and the payment information (425).
