The process relates to technology for manufacturing cellulose and can be used in particular in the cellulose and paper industry both for producing cellulose raw material and for modifying the finished cellulose raw material. The process for processing fibrous material comprises at least one operation for high-temperature processing of fibrous material in a liquid medium and electrical action, wherein the operation for high-temperature processing is performed separately from the electrical action operation, and electrohydraulic processing is used as said electrical action. The electrohydraulic processing can be performed in a liquid medium with a pH value in the range of from 6 to 9, with the optimum magnitude of the power of the electrohydraulic shock being determined depending on the specific magnitude of said pH value. Moreover, in the process for processing fibrous material, the electrohydraulic processing can also be performed prior to the operation for high-temperature processing of fibrous material. The process for processing fibrous material can also comprise a refining operation, wherein the electrohydraulic processing is performed after each of the possible operations in the process, and also the electrohydraulic processing can also be performed prior to the operation for high-temperature processing of fibrous material.
