A machine tool comprises separate positive driving means for moving a main slide 1 and an auxiliary slide 2 mounted thereon in perpendicular directions, the movement of each slide being opposed by fluid-pressure applied to one side of a piston-and-cylinder device mounted between each slide and its support. The slide 1 is mounted on a saddle T which is locked in position when it is desired to carry out a screwcutting operation with a tool on the cross-slide 2. The slide 1 is fed by a cam and follower 8, 10, the movement being opposed by the piston and cylinder 14, 20. When cutting conical threads, the slide 2 is moved by an adjust - able linear cam 34 against the opposing force of fluid-pressure in the cylinder 30.
