A mobile telecommunications device is installed within a vehicle and configured to log driving information associated with the vehicle when driven. The mobile device is programmed to register the start of a driving period during which the mobile device is installed to the vehicle and the vehicle is being driven by a driver. The mobile device is also programmed to process sensor data during the driving period to derive driving information associated with how the vehicle is driven and to store a selection of the driving information to a memory. The sensor data may be from one or more of a camera, positional sensor (GPS), acceleration sensor and an audio sensor. The processor is able to detect the occurrence of an event from the sensor data and store driving information associated with the event to the memory. The device also provides an indication to the user that an event has been detected and receives user confirmation or denial that the detected event has actually occurred. The device may transmit event-related data to a remote system, such as the emergency services or an insurance company. The telecommunications device is used instead of a single-purpose driving information recorder, reducing cost. |
