The process of the parent Specification is modified by carrying out the oxidation in two stages, first at around 100 DEG C. to yield p-chloromethyl-benzoic acid, then after separating off this product re-oxidizing it at a temperature up to 120 DEG C.; the process is carried out with 40-60 per cent nitric acid without the application of pressure. The p-chloromethyl-benzoic acid may be purified by esterification and saponification before re-oxidation. Examples are given of the process in which xylylene dichloride is oxidized with 50 per cent nitric acid.
