<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the degree of polymerization of cellulose ether in a good accuracy and also aim at the stabilization of quality and production process. <P>SOLUTION: This method for producing the alkali cellulose of which degree of polymerization is controlled, is provided by depolymerizing the alkali cellulose obtained by bringing the pulp in contact with an alkali solution in the presence of oxygen-containing gas flow, while measuring the supplied amount of oxygen in the supplied oxygen-containing gas flow and the discharged oxygen amount of the discharged oxygen-containing gas flow.
