[Problem] To provide a backlight device which can be easily configured while allowing a liquid crystal display device to generate high brightness when viewed from the front. [Solution] A backlight device (11) according to an embodiment is provided with a surface light emitting unit (15) and a light deflection layer (16) onto which the light is incident from the surface light emitting unit (15). In a surface orthogonal to a first direction from the surface light emitting unit to the light deflection layer, for first to fourth azimuthal angles of 0°, 45°, 90° and 135° that are angles with respect to a second direction from a light source (13) in the surface light emitting unit to a light guiding plate (12), when the brightness at a given distance from the point to be measured on the light emitting surface in the surface light emitting unit is measured within the visual range from -40° to +40°, from -60° to -74°, and from +60° to +74° with respect to the first direction, all of the brightness within the visual range from -40° to +40° in the first to fourth azimuthal angles are no more than 40% with respect to the maximum value of the brightness within the visual range from -60° to -74° and from +60° to +74° in the first to fourth azimuthal angles. |
