The present invention provides a method and a terminal for prompting an incoming ringtone according to an incoming number, wherein the method comprises that: when receiving an incoming signal, the terminal obtains the incoming number from the incoming signal which includes an incoming telephone call or an incoming message; when the incoming number does not belong to the numbers stored in the terminal, the corresponding incoming ringtone is played according to the digits in predetermined positions of the incoming number and a preset characteristic digit ringtone mapping table. The present invention performs match and classification for the digits in predetermined positions of incoming numbers not stored in the terminal and preset characteristic digits, and separately generates, according to the classification, incoming ringtones and message picture ringtones corresponding to the characteristic digits, thereby enlarging the identification range of incoming numbers, overcoming the drawback that in the prior art incoming ringtones and/or message picture ringtones can only be generated according to the telephone numbers stored in the terminal, but incoming ringtones and message picture ringtones can not be generated for the incoming telephone numbers not stored in the terminal according to the classification, and further improving user experience effect.
