The step (18) has a tread (22) pivotable along an axis between retracted position and operative position. A riser (24) is pivotable with the tread along another axis, so that the riser supports the tread in the operative position, where the former axis is near to longitudinal edge of tread, and the latter axis is near to opposite longitudinal edge of the tread. The tread is formed to be retractable so as to be able to align itself with a floor (14) of a vehicle, where the length of the riser is less than or equal to the length of the tread. An independent claim is also included for a floor of a vehicle.
