Sporting articles made of wood such as cricket bats, cricket stumps, hockey sticks, skis, racquets and other equipment are treated by roughening the part to be treated, dipping the roughened part into a solution of a plastic, removing the article and allowing it to dry, redipping in a more concentrated solution of the same or another plastic, allowing to dry and repeating the process of successive dippings in more concentrated solutions until the required toughening and protective effect is obtained. Preferably only the striking area of the bat or stick or other effective portion is treated. Cellulose esters and ethers (particularly cellulose acetate and nitrate) and polythene are specified plastics. The solution may be coloured, or made opaque (by addition of antimony oxide). A matt or glossy finish may be obtained. The examples describe the treatment of a cricket bat and a tennis racquet.
|
