The cinnamic acid ester of b -hydroxyethyl cellulose is prepared by adding cinnamoyl chloride to b -hydroxyethyl cellulose in dry pyridine. The reaction mixture is diluted with acetone and poured into water to precipitate the product. The o-chloro cinnamate and m-nitro cinnamate are similarly prepared. It is stated that cinnamyl esters of other hydroxyalkyl celluloses may be prepared in a similar manner.
