<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramide production promoter, a humectant and a skin care preparation for external use that each exhibit an excellent action for promoting production of ceramide that plays an important role in a moisturizing mechanism and a barrier mechanism of the skin. <P>SOLUTION: The ceramide production promoter, the humectant and the skin care preparation for external use contain as an effective ingredient a compound represented by general formula (1). In the formula, R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>-R<SP POS="POST">3</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a 1-12C acyl group. The compound represented by general formula (1) can be isolated, for example, from a plant such as Melia toosendan Sieb. et Zucc. or the like. A fruit or bark is preferably employed in the case of isolation from Melia toosendan Sieb. et Zucc.
