The device has an impact protection unit (2) with a foldable sheath outwardly expanded in a direction of travel before a crash. The impact protection unit is expanded by filling with non-newtonian fluid e.g. starch solution. The impact protection unit is expanded by filling with a fast-hardening foam material. The impact protection unit is expanded with gas. The foldable sheath encloses the expanded gas closely. An impact sensor (4) is designed as a radar sensor for measuring distance and/or relative speed of objects in surroundings of a vehicle (1).
