The mammography apparatus (1) comprises a biopsy device, and a multi-element arm (9) having joints (12,13,14). A needle adapter (16) for receiving a biopsy element (17) provided with a biopsy needle (8), is hinged at one end of the arm, such that the biopsy needle is orientated in the space. The biopsy device comprises a robot controller by which the arm, joints of arm, needle adapter, biopsy element and the biopsy needle are controllable.
