<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a V3D display system to display 2D images and as3D images. <P>SOLUTION: A described projection display can be used in the following four display modes: (A) a rear-projection 2D display; (B) a volumetric 3D (V3D) display; (C) an auto-stereoscopic 3D display based on parallax barriers; and (D) a projector display. Conversion among the four display modes requires only one to three adjustment steps by a user. By using a sub-panel illumination or projection mode, the system can operate in V3D, 2D and as3D modes. By using a full-panel mode, the system can operate in 2D and projector modes.
