<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical modulator capable of shortening length. <P>SOLUTION: A semiconductor optical modulator is a Mach-Zehnder semiconductor optical modulator that comprises two couplers 11 and 17, and two arm waveguides for connecting them, and that consists of a semiconductor which comprises: modulation electrodes 13a and 13b for executing modulation by applying a high-frequency wave on the same arm waveguides; and phase adjusting electrodes 16a and 16b for adjusting an operating point by applying a direct-current voltage. The semiconductor optical modulator comprises: delay parts 14a and 14b that are connected behind the modulation electrodes 13a and 13b, narrow a gap between the arm waveguides and equalize a propagation distance between the arm waveguides; turn-round parts 15a and 15b that are connected behind the delay parts 14a and 14b and consist of curved waveguides for changing a propagation direction of light 180-degree; and phase adjusting electrodes 16a and 16b that are connected behind the turn-round parts 15a and 15b and execute a phase adjustment of the light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
