<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an observer to observe a bright three-dimensional image display with low cross-talk through polarizing spectacles of a passive method while using light valves having insufficient response speeds, and further to secure brightness of a two-dimensional image display. <P>SOLUTION: Light valves 21 through 23 form image light for a right eye and a left eye in a time-sharing manner by illuminating light from illuminating sections 3 through 6 and switch polarization directions of the image light by a phase difference panel 32 so as to magnify and project the image light by a projection lens 33. Since polarization directions of each image light for the right eye and the left eye are different from each other, a three-dimensional image can be observed. A projection type display device includes: a black insertion liquid crystal panel 30; and black insertion polarization elements 29 and 31 disposed at both sides of the black insertion liquid crystal panel 30. The projection type display device further comprises: a black insertion section constituted such that a light shading period can be inserted between the image light for the right eye and the image light for the left eye by controlling the black insertion liquid crystal panel 30; and a movement control section for moving the black insertion polarization elements 29 and 31 between a position in an optical path of the image light and a position out of the optical path thereof. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
