<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem with a conventional technique, wherein there is a room for further improvement in a more proper evacuating operation. <P>SOLUTION: The elevator has a riding car, a balancing weight, a car side separating device, a weight side separating device, and a control device. The riding car can go up and down through an elevating passage. The balancing weight is coupled with the riding car and can go up and down through elevating passage interlocking with the riding car. The car side separating device can separate heavy loads arranged in the riding car from the riding car. The weight side separating device can separate the heavy loads arranged in the balancing weight from the balancing weight.
