PURPOSE: A portable terminal for controlling battery consumption of an application and a controlling method thereof are provided to prevent unnecessary battery consumption of a portable terminal by operating an application for vehicle number recognition. CONSTITUTION: A touch screen(151) displays an interface of an application for vehicle number recognition in response to touch input. An acceleration sensor(145) detects an angle between a touch screen side and a ground. A controller(180) operates the touch screen in order to display an interface of the application. The controller interrupts operation of the application and switches a current mode of the touch screen into a power saving mode.
